323 S. Garfield Avenue
About this Home:
Built in 1928-1929, this residence was designed by Wisconsin architect, Frank M. Riley, and is an outstanding example of his Colonial Revival period.
Originally built for Bernard Palmer Jr., the home enjoyed generously designed rooms with gracious styling, typical of the Frank Riley aesthetic, while the kitchen was a simple, utilitarian room designed for staff only.
Today, few would argue that the kitchen is possibly the most important room of the modern family home. With that in mind, a substantial renovation was in order. Most importantly, the owners felt it important to ensure compatibility with the home's overall design. To that end, great care was taken to maintain the original footprint of the house and materials with which Riley worked decades ago were used, such as maple flooring and Italian Creme Marfil marble. With Mr. Riley's taste in mind, light fixtures were chosen in keeping with the others already chosen by the architect himself and which are reproductions of authentic fixtures from the Colonial Revival period. Simple stainless steel appliances were chosen to take a backseat to the historic-minded aesthetic of the room.
The renovated room has a wonderfully warm feel and perfectly completes the home's main floor in a manner in which Frank M. Reilly would be pleased.
